William James (Bliss) Batt (1834 - 1930) was a Congregational Minister from Massachusetts. He was a great advocate for prison reform and would become the Chaplain of the Massachusetts Reformatory in Concord, Mass. in 1885. The penitentiary, the oldest running prison for men in Massachusetts, opened in 1878 and over time has had its share of famous prisoners, including Malcolm X, who spent 15 months in it in 1947 and 1948. Batt's book, although written in a fiction form about the prisoner Cyrus Knox, presented a case study of the influence of religion on inmates, the potential for rehabilitation, and the necessity for reforms.
